“You are searching the world for treasure, but the real treasure is yourself…” – Rumi
Kia ora, I am Naomi and I am new to the Arahura team. I have a gentle, person-centred, trauma- and attachment informed approach to counselling. I also use aspects of CBT, ACT and mindfulness, as well as creative therapy (where helpful for my client). Part of my being at Arahura involves training in psychotherapeutic approaches.
Over the next two years I am focussing on working with people aged 18 and over, and particularly those working through relational, identity and/or trauma related issues and challenges. Previously I have worked as a primary and early childhood teacher, in clinical youth mental health, and in a parenting re-education programme. Alongside my private practice, I tutor beginning counsellors.
I am strongly committed to standing beside my clients as they work through painful realities in order to discover more of their true selves. I have been deeply shaped by my own counselling experiences, and see my role as sacred and privileged.
Outside of work I look after myself by spending time with my husband and children, friends, and our crazy labrador puppy! I enjoy reading, watching movies, playing boardgames and exploring nature (including tramping and kayaking), and am always up for seeing more of our beautiful country and the world. I love sunsets and sunrises, and am a true believer in truth, beauty and goodness… these are what guide me spiritually.
Areas of professional interest: Trauma healing and recovery, core self issues, attachment, grief, anxiety/depression, parenting, spiritual/existential crisis, chronic pain management.
