Mark Murphy

Mark-MurphyM.A. (Dist.); Cert. MindBody Healthcare; Dip. Gestalt Psychotherapy MNZAP, GANZ.

I was born in Mumbai, India; my ‘mountain’ is Malabar Hill, my ‘water’ is the Arabian Sea. In India, my tribe is Christianity.

My mother’s people are Protestant – a mixture of Cumbrian dissenters and Scottish Baptists. My father’s people, in contrast, are Catholic – escaping the 19th century Irish potato famines to settle in northern England.

My family moved to Aotearoa when I was young, aboard the waka of Air New Zealand. I now live in Ohinetahi, under the gaze of Te Ahu Patiki/Mt. Herbert and beside Whakaraupo/Lyttelton Harbour.

I have many years of experience as a therapist, group worker, and a trainer of counsellors and psychotherapists.

I consider my therapy approach to be ‘integrative’ – attending to the whole person – mind, body and spirit. Gestalt therapy is my main approach, but I also use person-centred, psychodynamic, and creative approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. I have training in ‘MindBody Healthcare’ – working with the body and somatic illness as potentially expressing our self or life story – and have experience with, and an ongoing interest in, ‘subtle energy’ approaches to holistic wellbeing. I am nourished by Christian spirituality, especially the mystical contemplative tradition, and I am open to working with all forms of faith or none.

A wise man once said: almost anything can be navigated if one is not alone, is accompanied. I am committed to being a real live presence alongside my clients, as well as utilizing my skill, expertise and my own experiences of suffering and healing.

I am a father of two small red-haired children, and a husband to Helen.

Session fees are $85 – 120 per session, depending on the client’s ability to pay.
